Arm Lift

Introduction to Arm Lift

A Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms. The soft tissue in the upper arm can become lax and begin to sag over time as part of natural aging or from substantial weight loss. Houston patients can give their arms a more toned, youthful look with an arm lift. During an arm lift, liposuction may be used as part of the procedure to remove any excess fat that has accumulated. An arm lift is also often performed as part of post-bariatric surgery. If you are interested in an arm lift in Houston, consider scheduling a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Erika Sato, known for her excellence in patient care and satisfaction.

What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fat in the upper arm area. This is a highly sought-after procedure, as the upper arms can be a stubborn area for excess fat deposits and sagging skin, leading to what is informally termed “bat wing” arms. Surgeons create incisions under the arm or on the back side during an arm lift to minimize scarring. Once they access the underlying tissue, they manipulate it to create tight, toned arms.

Let’s Get Started

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting an arm lift in Houston is to schedule a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sato. Dr. Sato will carefully examine your arms, taking into consideration factors such as skin quality, amount of excess fat, and muscle tone, and try to align them with your aesthetic goals and expectations. She will also discuss your medical history, including any past surgeries or treatments you have undergone, in addition to any long-term medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension that can interfere with anesthesia and the burden of surgery.

This consultation is a valuable opportunity for you to ask questions or express any concerns, and Dr. Sato will help you decide if an arm lift is indeed the best way to address your goals.

If you both agree to proceed with the procedure, she will make a surgery plan for you, which you can then take to our patient coordinator for scheduling and pricing. This is also a good time to ask for any pre-operative instructions to ensure a successful and smooth procedure and recovery.

What to Expect on the Day of Arm Lift Surgery

An arm lift is usually performed as an outpatient procedure in our on-site facility under local anesthetic and IV sedation. The operative time varies from patient to patient, as each case is unique.

If this body-contouring procedure is done as part of multiple procedures, it might require general anesthesia in a facility with overnight capabilities.

During an arm lift, excess fat may be removed using liposuction. Dr. Sato then makes an incision on the inside aspect of the upper arm. The length of the incision is patient-dependent. Any loose skin is trimmed away, leaving a slimmer, more contoured arm. If non-absorbable sutures are used, they will be removed in 2 weeks in the post-operative clinic in Houston.

Arm Lift Recovery

After the surgery, your incision will be covered with paper tape, and a compression garment will be worn to help reduce swelling. You will experience some soreness, bruising, and swelling. If subcutaneous drains are placed intra-operatively, you will receive drain teaching.

Most people take 1-2 weeks off from work to recover. Strenuous activity is discouraged for 4-6 weeks. Dr. Sato will give you full post-operative care instructions and monitor your progress during follow-up visits.
With an arm lift, incisions are placed on the inside of the upper arm to make them less noticeable. The scars will fade over time and can be hidden with clothing.
