Tummy Tuck

Introduction to Tummy Tuck

After pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or aging, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can restore a flat, toned stomach. The surgery trims excess sagging skin, firms the underlying abdominal muscles, and repositions the navel in a more aesthetically pleasing location. Drawing on precision-based techniques and an eye for artistry and balance, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Erika Sato in Houston, TX, delivers natural-looking improvements that enhance confidence and overall quality of life.

Achieve Balance

What is a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure to sculpt the belly by toning lax muscles and removing excess skin. The midsection can be notoriously difficult to reshape through dieting and exercise alone, especially after pregnancy or menopause. In women who have given birth, a tummy tuck can combat a condition known as diastasis recti, which results in weakened or separated abdominal muscles. The procedure is also an ideal solution for patients who have experienced massive weight loss and are now dealing with sagging skin folds in the stomach region.

What are the Different Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures?

Dr. Sato in Houston, TX, performs the full range of tummy tuck techniques and will advise you on the best solution for contouring your physique during your private consultation. Types of abdominoplasty include:

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck sculpts the entire midsection, trimming excess skin while firming the underlying abdominal muscles. The belly button may also be repositioned to complement your contouring results.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck focuses on the section of the stomach below the navel, eliminating sagging skin. It does not typically involve muscle tightening or repositioning of the navel.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck accomplishes all the same goals as a full tummy tuck but also contours and sculpts the flanks, waist, and hips for a complete transformation.

Fleur-De-Lis Tummy Tuck

This approach uses a unique incision shape resembling the petals of a Fluer-De-Lis. It firms the belly both horizontally and vertically, providing comprehensive improvement in all directions.

Drainless Tummy Tuck

A drainless tummy tuck reduces the risk of fluid buildup, eliminating the need for drains during recovery.

Tummy Tuck with Liposuction

This approach combines strategic liposuction with abdominoplasty to eradicate drooping skin and remove pockets of stubborn, exercise-resistant fat.

Non-Surgical Tummy Tuck

A non-surgical skin tightening treatment can be performed for patients who do not wish to undergo a more invasive procedure. Results typically last up to one year.

What Are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty transforms the figure and delivers a more youthful, shapely aesthetic. Benefits include:

  • Firms the underlying stomach muscles
  • Trims redundant skin folds
  • Smooths stretch marks
  • Refines and repositions the belly button
  • Creates a flatter, more toned midsection
  • Enhances self-confidence
  • Allows you to get more out of your gym workouts
  • Boosts stamina and energy
  • Expands clothing options
  • It can be well-paired with liposuction or a thigh lift

Who Are the Best Candidates for a Tummy Tuck?

You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you are a healthy non-smoker over the age of 18 with realistic expectations for your results. The procedure is suggested for patients who have been unable to sculpt the stomach through conventional means and who desire a firmer, flatter midsection. If you intend to lose a significant amount of weight, or if you plan to become pregnant, Dr. Sato will advise you to wait before undergoing the procedure, as further weight loss or pregnancies could reverse the benefits of abdominoplasty.
Once you’re scheduled for a tummy tuck, Dr. Sato will give you instructions about how to prepare for the procedure. You may need to undergo additional lab work, and you will be asked to avoid inflammatory drugs and supplements that increase bleeding. You should bring a driver with you on the day of your procedure.

Let’s Get Started

What’s the first step?

During your tummy tuck consultation with Dr. Erika Sato in Houston, TX, the doctor will discuss your goals and make recommendations for the most appropriate surgical techniques. A partial or mini tummy tuck is possible for patients whose fat and excess skin are isolated below the navel (belly button), while a full abdominoplasty treats the entire abdominal area. Dr. Sato will thoroughly review your medical history, including any allergies, pre-existing conditions, or previous surgeries, to ensure your abdominoplasty is safe.

What to Expect on the Day of Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck is usually an outpatient procedure done under local anesthetic and IV sedation at our in-office operating room or under general anesthesia at an ambulatory surgery center. The procedure is highly customized based on your needs, so the length of surgery can vary greatly. A tummy tuck takes around two to four hours to complete.

A single small incision will be used for a mini abdominoplasty. For a full abdominoplasty, Dr. Sato will make an incision from one hip bone to the other, low along the pubic hairline. There might be another incision around the belly button.
She will remove the excess skin, tighten and repair the belly muscles, and reshape the abdominal silhouette. Liposuction can be used to trim excess fat, and the navel is retained in its proper location. She will then close the incisions using state-of-the-art suturing techniques.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

After the surgery, your abdomen will be bandaged, and you will be dressed in a compression garment to help reduce swelling. You will likely experience mild to moderate soreness, bruising, and swelling, which are only temporary and can be minimized through pain medications prescribed by Dr. Sato. If subcutaneous drains are placed intra-operatively, the doctor will provide instructions on emptying them at home.

Most patients take 10-14 days off from work to support their recovery. Heavy lifting (anything over 10 lbs) and strenuous activity are discouraged for 4-6 weeks. Dr. Sato will give you full post-operative care instructions and monitor your progress during follow-up visits. She will inform you when you are fit to resume normal physical activities, including work and exercise. There will be some scarring with either full or partial abdominoplasty, but these lines will fade significantly over time and can usually be hidden under clothing, including swimwear and lingerie.
