Breast Augmentation Myths: Debunked

By Dr. Sato

How much do you know about breast augmentation? Some of the things you’ve heard may not be true. Let’s explore some breast augmentation myths and uncover the truth behind these common falsehoods.

Breast Augmentation Myth #1- Breast Augmentation Can Correct Sagging

Breast augmentation is a wonderful option for increasing breast volume and size, but it doesn’t correct every breast problem. While sagging is a common complaint, it isn’t addressed through augmentation. Put an implant into sagging breasts and you’ll end up with bigger, saggy breasts. If you have breast sagging, you need a breast lift. This surgery can often be performed at the same time as breast augmentation so you can increase size and correct sagging with one operation.

Breast Augmentation Myth #2- Silicone Breast Implants Aren’t Safe

Silicone implants are a safe and effective way to increase the size of your breasts. You might recall that silicone implants were pulled from the market during the 1990s due to concerns over their safety. Many of these concerns were later proven to be unfounded. After many years of study silicone breast implants were reintroduced in 2006 as an FDA-approved option for breast enhancement. In order to reintroduce these implants the manufacturers had to complete many comprehensive safety studies, some of which included monitoring women with silicone implants over a period of several years. Women with silicone implants are encouraged to get MRI imaging every few years to ensure the implant hasn’t ruptured. Both saline and silicone implants feature a silicone shell (saline are filled with saline solution; silicone are filled with a silicone gel).

Breast Augmentation Myth #3- You Can’t Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation

Many women opt for breast augmentation before they’ve had children. If you have breast augmentation and later get pregnant, odds are you’ll be able to breastfeed your baby should you desire. Some incision types are more conducive to future breastfeeding so, if this important to you, please mention it during your breast augmentation consultation.

Breast Augmentation Myth #4- Breast Implants Last Forever

Breast implants are long-lasting, but they aren’t necessarily permanent. Implant replacement may be necessary at some point after your original breast augmentation. Some primary reasons for implant replacement include: capsular contracture (a complication of breast augmentation that causes the breast to harden and distort), implant rupture, and a desire to change implant size.

Women with saline implants will easily be able to tell if an implant ruptures. The saline solution will leak out and be absorbed into the body. The breast will also deflate. It isn’t as easy to detect if this has happened with silicone implants. The breasts often look and feel the same after a rupture. You may need MRI imaging every few years to check for a rupture. If an implant does rupture, it can be replaced.
