Achieve Balance

What is Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal is a procedure designed to address concerns related to a previous breast augmentation surgery. There are typically three reasons that a woman would request breast implant removal:

  • Aesthetic goals – We all go through different life stages, during which we make many choices, some of which are more long-lasting than others. Breast augmentation surgery may have been the right choice when you were younger, but many women desire a softer and more natural appearance as they get older or become mothers. In cases like these, Dr. Sato may recommend additional procedures such as a fat transfer and/or a breast lift to ensure the breasts are still aesthetically pleasing.
  • Something is cosmetically wrong – Even with a talented and experienced plastic surgeon performing your implant surgery, there is still the possibility of complications. The most common cosmetic concerns include implant rippling (occurs over time as the implant ages), implant displacement (implant moving into the armpit when supine or sagging down the chest wall when upright due to gravity), and/or the breast sagging over top of the implant (waterfall deformity – the breast tissue ages and sags, but the implant stays at the original position), as well as capsular contracture. When this occurs, patients may wish to maintain the original appearance of their breasts/implants, in which case they may want new implants (implant exchange) or implant removal combined with other breast surgery in order to maintain an aesthetically pleasing outcome.
  • Medical complications – While a qualified breast augmentation plastic surgeon does their best to provide safe results, there are incidents where surgical intervention is required to protect the patient. These complications can include silicone implant rupture, capsular contracture (Grade III or IV), ALCL, or Breast Implant Illness (BII). In this scenario, the patient may focus primarily on their health, and the cosmetic outcome is less of a priority.

Breast implant removal can be performed under local or general anesthesia and typically takes one to three hours to complete. However, the procedure is patient-specific, and the total treatment time is based on the extent of the changes needed, whether implant replacement is required, implant rupture is present, and/or you desire additional treatment options such as liposuction with fat transfer or mastopexy.

Let’s Get Started

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting breast implant removal in Houston is to contact our practice and schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Sato. When you come in for your appointment, you will be warmly greeted by our patient concierge team, who will check you in.

When you meet with Dr. Sato, she will review your medical and surgical history, discuss your aesthetic goals, and answer any questions you may have about breast implant removal. She will also examine your breasts and previous incision placement to determine the best technique for your implant removal.

Once you have discussed everything, Dr. Sato will create your surgical plan. Our patient coordinator will help you schedule your procedure and pre-op appointment and provide any important instructions to follow in the days leading up to your surgery to ensure the safest and most optimal results possible.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Implant Removal Surgery

On your breast implant removal day, you will meet with Dr. Sato to review your surgical plan and address any last-minute questions or concerns.

During the surgery, Dr. Sato will make incisions to access the breast implants, the location of which will depend on various factors, such as the type of implant being removed and whether additional work, such as a breast lift, capsulotomy, or capsulectomy, is being done. At the end of the surgery, the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures, and a dressing is applied. We will monitor you in our recovery room as you wake up from anesthesia before we release you.

On average, breast implant removal surgery is performed in about one hour but can take longer if additional breast work is done simultaneously.

Breast Implant Removal Recovery

After breast implant removal in Houston, you will be able to return home that same day, but you will require a friend or family member to drive you home and help you around the house for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Some mild discomfort and bruising are to be expected in the treated area and can last for a few weeks. Our post-surgical team will provide you with specific instructions to help manage any pain and promote optimal healing at this time. You will need to wear a supportive bra or compression garment to minimize swelling and support your breasts during recovery. You may also require drains.

It’s essential to follow any and all of Dr. Sato’s post-operative care instructions closely. These instructions may include restrictions on physical activities and medications to aid in healing. Most patients can return to light activities within a few days, but full recovery may take several weeks.
